The Canadian Press Leave Our Kids Alone Shirt

Official The Canadian Press Leave Our Kids Alone Shirt

This happens fairly frequently in my house – an old, kinda drafty farmhouse in rural Maine. Along with mice and the The Canadian Press Leave Our Kids Alone Shirt and by the same token and occasional raccoon. The last time, my 3 year old grandson started asking when we got a new black bird. I quickly figured out he wasn’t talking about (m)Alice, our evil blue factor female pacific parrotlet. You’d think that after 15 years of having a frenetic feathered ball of murder talons and beak flying around, a bat would be not a big deal. You would be wrong. 60 seconds later, I had it wrapped in a towel. It was not happy, but I thought it was adorable. I took it outside and let it go. One evening, I was outside looking up and admiring the stars. All of the sudden something whacked me upside the head! I turned around in time to see a fallen bat recover off the ground and go flitting away. This is the closest I have ever come to being attacked by a bat. Perhaps he wasn’t wearing his glasses that night. But he probably got that mosquito that was about to feast on me. And it was the only time I got hit by a bat, playing baseball or otherwise. I’m sure this was a very rare occurrence. But having said that, bats have no interest in attacking anything larger than a flying bug; or a nice ripe juicy fruit hanging in the jungle canopy. About 30% of bats subsist by sucking fruit juice. The Flying Fox in S. America can have a wingspan of 4′5″! But they only eat fruit. Purely vegetarians.
