Let’s go on the Jmcgg Tbh You Know I’m Down To Float Shirt and by the same token and amazing, fun, complicated journey of upside-down bat evolution! They hang upside-down so they can just let go and drop, to fly… but I can elaborate a bit on how they got that way. First off, all bats hang upside down. It’s one of the defining characteristics that make them a bat. As to why… it has to do with their long-ago ancestors (pre-bats), and the complex way they developed first hunting, then escaping. I won’t go back to the very beginning. We’ll start at the point where they began to become specialized. At one point, pre-bats were strictly tree dwellers. They scurried along to capture bugs… but in trees, not on the ground. Parts of the tree were vertical (the trunk), so when hunting along the trunk, they would just sit and wait for prey to come close. If they were facing upwards, it would be difficult and slower to scurry up the tree trunk to grab a meal, therefore their hunting method was to sit and wait, facing downward. That way, when they grabbed their meal with their hands, their back legs were still holding the bark and they wouldn’t fall backwards when they let go with their forelimbs. This allowed them to use both their mouth and their hands to capture; obviously an advantage. Plus, if a meal was right below them, gravity would allow them to scurry down faster than they could scurry up. It was also faster than hunting on horizontal branches… again due to the advantage in speed that gravity gave them when attacking from above. So the ones that faced downwards were more successful hunters. From that perspective, evolution did it’s thing and this downward hunting method became their saving grace, and they thrived.
