But as fashion changed and clothing became closer fitting buttons were used more frequently. Most men dressed themselves and it was easier for them to hold the button in the right hand and push it through the button hole being held in place by the left. Ladies had dressers who would of course stand in front of the person they were dressing. So unless the were left handed it was difficult to do buttons up. So, how did that tradition develop, you ask. Way back in the time when tailored garments were only for the wealthy and the nobles, men would dress themselves, often with a little assistance from a personal valet. But doing up the buttons was always done by the man. Most people were, and still are, right handed, and manipulating a small(ish) button to get it into a buttonhole or loop is much easier if you hold the button with your dominant had, usually the right. So it developed that buttons were always placed on the right hand side and the buttonholes on the left.
