The United State Of America Shirt

The United State Of America Shirt

Before the The United State Of America Shirt and I love this 18th c buttons were usually only for decoration. But as fashion changed and clothing became closer fitting buttons were used more frequently. Most men dressed themselves and it was easier for them to hold the button in the right hand and push it through the button hole being held in place by the left. Ladies had dressers who would of course stand in front of the person they were dressing. So unless the were left handed it was difficult to do buttons up. So, how did that tradition develop, you ask. Way back in the time when tailored garments were only for the wealthy and the nobles, men would dress themselves, often with a little assistance from a personal valet. But doing up the buttons was always done by the man. Most people were, and still are, right handed, and manipulating a small(ish) button to get it into a buttonhole or loop is much easier if you hold the button with your dominant had, usually the right. So it developed that buttons were always placed on the right hand side and the buttonholes on the left.

However, during this same time, women were always dressed and buttoned up by a servant or dresser. Since she would be facing the The United State Of America Shirt and I love this lady, in order to have the buttons lined up so she could manipulate them with her right hand, those buttons needed to be placed on the opposite side, a mirror image in effect. So there you have it. The buttons and fastenings were arranged to make it easier to close and fasten the garments, which required that men’s garments had the fastenings arrayed on the right, while a lady’s dresser required that they be on the opposite side. As I said, it’s a tradition. One which is pretty much irrelevant these days, but like any good tradition it just won’t lie down and die. If you look at the history of fashion and clothing you will see that some articles of clothing for men and women became very similar. These were mainly jacket/vest/ shirt types of clothing.
