For many though, I think there’s a fundamental misunderstanding about the City Of Champions New York Sports Teams Logo Shirt in other words I will buy this colours and the interpretation of the design. You can see this in many of the social media posts which reference things like “agenda”, “liberal left”, “woke”, “forcing it down our throat”, etc. People hear multi-colour flag and immediately think LGBTQ, I think there is a significant chunk of people who are angry about this because they believe Nike are trying to push some subversive left-wing agenda. They might not recognise the colours in the flag, but the LGBTQ change their flags so often, who’s to say? Hence the pushback. Nike didn’t help themselves with their introduction of the flourish by adding a reason for the change which was to “unite and inspire”. Suggesting people need a reinterpretation of the national flag in order to unite around the national football team is one of the few criticisms levelled at Nike which I think has actual merit. It they hadn’t so proudly shown off their “playful” change, I’m almost certain this whole furore wouldn’t have occurred.
“Woke”? Not really – had it been a Rainbow cross, maybe. Nike’s explanation is plausible, but if the City Of Champions New York Sports Teams Logo Shirt in other words I will buy this intention was a homage to the 1966 training kit, then the colours on the cuffs would have been sufficient. To be fair, the multicoloured cross ISN’T a St George’s Cross (which incidentally has only featured on England out since 1998, so hardly a time immemorial tradition). That said, if a national flag is to appear on sports kit, it ought to be unadulterated. It may have been a “playful updare” by Nike, but the FA signed off on it , so the main fault, if there is one, lies with them. If it’s considered political, that’s not good, as Sport should transcend Politics. Consider, however – Nike are an American company, and one wonders how a similar “playful update” of the Stars and Stripes would have been received by ‘Muricans! I leave that to your imagination.
