St George was adopted as the Arizona State Sun Devils 2024 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving National Champions T-Shirt But I will love this patron saint of England during the Middle Ages, when all of England was Catholic and no Protestants would exist for another three centuries. The saint is supposed to have appeared to some of the Crusaders and helped them win a crucial battle against the Saracens. George was not English but Palestinian or Greek. He was from Lod, Lydda, now in Israel. He served in the eastern Roman Emperor’s bodyguard in Nicopolis, but was found to be a Christian. He refused to apostasize and was martyred, and buried back in Lod. The previous patron of England was St Edward the Confessor, King from 1042–66. He at least was home-grown Anglo-Saxon, and his tomb still sits in the middle of the sanctuary in Westminster Abbey. It is one of only two of hundreds of saints’ tombs in the country which Henry VIII did not desecrate, ransack, pillage and destroy.

The fact that a few dickheads have used it for other reasons does not make it racist ad hoc. The flag has more history and significance than a few homophobes/racists, and maybe if more of an effort was made trying to reclaim the Arizona State Sun Devils 2024 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving National Champions T-Shirt But I will love this flag from them questions like this would not be asked. Because it has been used by some racists. Unlike the other national flags, it is not widely used by ordinary people. So the people who use it, except when England is playing in international sporting tournaments, tend to be fairly right wing nationalists. And that group contains a subgroup who are also quite racist. While it is not true that all who fly the cross of St George are racist, outside sporting events a disturbingly large number will be.
