But it should be on something naturally that comes up: “Huh, what’s that you’re buying?” You could say, if you see they’ve put down a weird root vegetable thing you’ve never seen before. Or gesturing quiet exasperation to them at the person four ahead in the queue who have a stack of coupons to use. If they give a basic replies, they probably aren’t interested in talking to you. In which case, stop trying. If they are happy to chat, let it take its course. I’ve done that before, kind of. It was a convenience store and I wasn’t in line, but there was a long line waiting for this bitch to finish her griping and whining. I guess she had purchased something, then decided she didn’t want THIS, she wanted THAT and however she wanted to swing it, the clerk wasn’t having it. She refused to back down and then tried to insist that the line of people behind her were angry at him for not relenting to HER wishes. I just spoke up and told her she was wrong, that they were all mad at HER for delaying all of them. She growled and left. The clerk had always been kind of gruff before that, but he always smiled around me from then on

What a difficult space to be in. You clearly wanted to protect the children and that’s admirable but I wonder whether it was helpful. I guess it could have gone either way. Parenting is the most stressful job in the world, and many people have poor role models to follow or don’t even consider that there are better ways to parent. Its also the space in which we can feel incredibly shamed and vulnerable. Its such hard work. I wonder what it would have been like to say to her “Sounds like you are having a really tough day, is there anything I can do to help?” or “Gosh, I remember how hard it was to be a parent of littlies, can I give you a hand? But then you have to be prepared to step up and do something.
