To be clear, Miler is an anti-hero who has been called ‘the last of Ireland’s medieval bishops’. Miler didn’t cause the chaotic circumstances of Elizabethan Ireland, but he exploited them mercilessly, and in a shameless but successful way that makes him the sort of historical figure who would now be the protagonist of his own narrative, and not a bit part player in the stories of other more noble, but less devious people.
