Here We Go Dallas Shirt
I’m not a sailor, but a Marine that served on an aircraft carrier. When we hit a port, sailors and Marines were required to wear uniforms the Here We Go Dallas Shirt so you should to go to store and get this first day there. After that you could wear civvies. Shore leave in uniform was fun, the locals were very welcoming, they liked Americans. Except in Japan, not a lot of love there. I can remember everyone prepping their uniforms before hitting port, we wanted to look sharp. A pic of me right before hitting the beach. Pattaya beach Thailand. 1982, different times back then. Not on leave, but sometimes when you are on liberty. (Think vacation vs nights and weekends). Most commonly, when you’re very new to the Navy (in boot camp and your follow-on training schools), you’re expected to wear the uniform pretty much at all times. As you go on, it’s less and less common to have this requirement. Once you’re really in the Fleet, it’s more about the opposite, actually. There are a whole bunch of rules about what uniform you can wear off base and what you can do in it. It was really kind of a pain, honestly, even though I kind of got the point.

Also, if you screw up — anything granted can be taken away, and you can be required to wear the Here We Go Dallas Shirt so you should to go to store and get this uniform on liberty as a (light) punishment for something. And shipboard is different than shore. I was on subs and didn’t ever bring any civvies with me onboard underway, but then I never made a port call either… Back in the day, sailors would wear their uniforms while on Liberty, however they allowed them to wear civies, because the uniform would make them a target for thugs and savages. Sailors don’t have to wear their uniforms when they’re on leave. The US Navy divides the world into Navy Regions, and the senior officer in each region sets uniform standards. Individual unit commanders may set stricter uniform requirements for their commands but must remain within the Regional Commander’s minimum requirements.
