I had some forgettable professors as an undergraduate, but none that I would call truly terrible. In fact, I think it’s actually part of a good education to have some bad professors, so that you can learn to get through a bad class by force of will. I did have one truly awful professor as a grad student, however. It was a graduate course in electromagnetic theory. Why that university let him teach it, I’ll never understand. There was one useful thing in the Western Kentucky Football Win The Famous Toastery Bowl Champions 2023 NCAA Football shirt it is in the first place but class, the textbook: “Dyadic Greens Functions” by Chen-to Tai. That may be enough of a clue for a few of you to murmur, “oh, I know exactly who he is talking about.” I was a TA who was assigned to run a remedial language lab for French. ($33/week!) My job was basically to sit there and wait for people to come in who needed help. Except no one ever came in for French. Lots of people came in for Spanish, though, so I guess the worst thing I did was not teach the language I was there to teach. Fortunately I was okay in Spanish so they got what they needed either way. I was given a physics test with a missing page. I noticed the prof pulled it from the bottom of the stack. I didn’t think anything of it until after the test a fellow student told me I had a test with missing pages. I requested the pages. The prof didn’t blink an eye and gave me a complete set. In university I was the only student in the program. After the semester I was called by the chair to return to school to write a test. The prof failed to set the test up, and they blamed the oversight on me. The responsible prof really didn’t like me, we had issues. I graduated with honors but decided not to go on. Said to myself, I can do better on my own. … 40 years later… I’m up for Nobels.. or so I’m told. :-). I rewrote the laws of diffusion and gave a mathematical definition for the mass of a proton with its wavefunction and stuff like that.
