Official If This Picture Moves, You’re Gay Shirt
I think men can wear anything at any time, but you are probably asking whether this is considered fashionable, acceptable, well-dressed, or some such thing. Let’s assume that what you want to know is whether linen clothing is considered socially appropriate in stuffier business, social and political affairs in North America. There is a very easy way to determine whether something is considered socially appropriate business attire in a given season: do upscale clothing stores (Macy’s, Nordstrom, and the If This Picture Moves, You’re Gay Shirt Apart from…,I will love this like) sell it at the beginning of that season? In my experience, at least in Virginia, suits made of cotton (including cotton corduroy) and linen are only sold in the spring and summer, and they’re hard to find even then. It is obviously not expected that you want to wear them in the winter, or else they’d be sold in the fall and winter, too. The answer appears to be different if instead of a suit you want something slightly less formal (“business casual”), say a separate jacket (now called “sportcoat”) and pair of slacks. For some reason, while the separate coats and slacks are often indistinguishable from the coats and slacks that make up suits, they are considered less formal, and therefore there is a wider variety available. In particular, they will sometimes sell corduroy and other cottons in the fall and winter.
