For me, the graphics are so important. I have themed collections of shirts. Restaurants, fitness and funny sayings are just some of mine. You can look at the GSM – (grams per square meter) – usually it ranges from 100 to 200 with most shirts at 160 to 190. The higher the number, the thicker and heavier the shirt, but this doesn’t reflect on the quality of the shirt (in most cases). If you get a shirt at a lower GSM, it will be softer but may wear out quicker, and a higher GSM can be durable but not breathable.. so getting something in the middle at like 160 is best. I don’t think this is usually communicated when buying a single shirt so just remember that a softer shirt has a lower GSM and may become flimsy over time compared to a thicker shirt. Of course, taking care of your shirt (laundry etc.) is key as well. Construction wise, there’s not much you can do with a basic tee to make it more durable. The best thing to do is look at the seaming, most tee shirts are serged (its the crisscross seams you see holding fabric pieces together) how tight are they? Are they uneven or loose these are good indications on how long they would last. As for fabric, it really depends on the weather. While thicker shirts would technically last longer, they would suck for hot weather. I’d suggest finding a brand you like, buying more so you wear them less and hand wash them in cold water and hang dry. This will definitely lengthen the life of your clothes.

Just thinking it’s as Peter Nguyen says and you are laundering them roughly. Tshirts, uniquely, are fairly durable in white and colors will fade, screen prints get tackier with multiple washings. My personal favorite are 3 packs of Fruit of The Loom white Vneck T’s at about 9.00 for basics. American Apparel … love their work, all Los Angeles made and that’s a nice rare thing. Here in Venice Beach, there is a large American Apparel outlet where current things are marked down to 50% off and more. Business T’s? Heavier, more expensive, black or white only. But for everyday, don’t presume a higher price is indicative of better quality – it’s usually about smaller production. Laundering is everything … and drying at medium or low heat helps colors a lot. A liquid detergent may be gentler (use far less than recommended).
