Yes, he is undoubtedly stupid and can be loutish and rude but Homer is also eternally hopeful and optimistic – if there’s the slightest glimpse of a silver lining, he jumps at it. He also never means any harm, even when he is doing something harmful and if he feels he did something wrong, he always attempts to correct and atone for his misbehavior. Yes, he “hates” Ned Flanders – except not really, when he sees Ned actually suffer (as opposed to his fantasy) he acts to stop that suffering. He is, despite being profoundly stupid, never truly malicious.
