The article mostly talked about gay men and what’s called the ‘heterosexual code’, a term coined by queer activist Fujimi Noriaki. Basically, what the term means is, there’s no explicit hatred or anything towards gay people, but societal norms are so very based on heterosexual bonding that people don’t even notice it. In the workplace, this means talking about women (e.g. ‘idols’) and traditionally masculine activities with your colleagues, and flirting with the hostess or the waitress at a nomikai, and in extreme situations go to brothels with your colleagues. So people can tell you it’s fine to be gay in private but you should keep it to yourself, without realizing they’re being straight in public, and implicitly requiring you to as well.

So, admittedly, we can’t really say much about ancient Japan, including whether there was even awareness back then that homosexuality was a thing, but it gives us enough room for doubt as to the claim of ‘no historic homophobia’.
