Aside from that, openly carrying a weapon is going to call attention to a person. Even if it’s completely legal, it’s hard to tell an off-duty officer from a regular civilian. In this instance the officer can expect to be challenged by other officers, and I don’t know a single police officer that openly welcomes and invites that kind of attention. If you are a police officer, and you ask this question to your sergeant, the sergeant’s answer will most likely be another question. When I worked as a narcotics task force commander there were days I’d wear my uniform. There were days I dressed in jeans and a tee shirt. If I was going to court I’d have my suit, shirt and tie hanging up behind my office door and change before heading to the courthouse. I can only speak for myself. Yes, I respected military personnel both in and out of uniform. This respect, however, is revokable based on the actions of the individual person. I didn’t work in an area near a military base which limited my interaction to troops returning home from service, and not active duty troops out on leave.
