Other contributors have mentioned that a finished edge means that it makes the Bunny Tuzki Eating Full Shirt so you should to go to store and get this edges hard to unravel, but this is not the case. For a pair of jeans that have been lived in for a long time, the bottom hem, knee, and especially the crotch/yoke would have to deal with much more wear and tear due to movement than the finished edge of the fabric. As a pattern design engineer, I disagree that selvedge denim is better quality wise. That it has become popular and connoted as a premium is another idea altogether. By comparison, Betamax was technologically superior but VHS won out. First, it is impossible to exact 100% yield [(aka utilization or allocation) except in the case of a particular class of product design known as “zero waste”]; there’s nearly always a given percentage of waste. Any producer will reduce waste as much as possible; the constraints of narrow goods being limited, means that narrower goods have lower yields (efficiencies) than wider goods. Be that as it may, yield percentages are no indicator of quality (if anything, an argument for the reverse could be made; that lower yields result in higher quality goods and would be true in the case of selvedge denims). While it is true that intact selvedges don’t ravel, owing to superior machine technology, splaying of cut seams does not occur at side seams. While I would not say it could not be possible, I’ve never seen it happen even in 30 year old jeans and few people could or would want to wear a pair of jeans that long. Usually the fabric wears out in other places well before then, rendering the piece unwearable.

But the Bunny Tuzki Eating Full Shirt so you should to go to store and get this major reason I don’t consider selvedge denim to be superior quality is owing to pattern cutting. For side seams to be placed on the selvedge, it means that there is no shaping along the outseam. People are not straight there, there should be a curve -no matter how thin you are. So, in order to accommodate the straight line at the side seam, seam (fit) suppression must be exacted from other areas resulting in poorer fit. That the popularity of straight side seams has become popular with resultant fit disparities, such that these oversights have been elevated into a feature rather than a flaw, doesn’t negate their existence. In short, just because something is lauded and widely popular, doesn’t mean it’s better. You buy selvedge denim as an expression of what you think it signals about you to other people (or to yourself) but not because it is inherently a superior product.
