There is a lot that we don’t understand about what goes on inside a dog’s mind. That said I’ll tell you an anecdote. I had a Cocker Spaniel (Prince) that I rescued from dire circumstances and he got 5 years added to his life by being rescued. When I rescued him he was in such poor physical condition a veterinarian gave him a week to live. Given it was single digit Temps that night I grabbed a flashlight and went searching for him. Not finding him quickly made me wonder if he’d slipped out of the yard. Something he’d done before. Walking the fence line I caught sight of a very subtle motion. Walking closer to what I saw there he was. He’d dug a hole in frozen ground, lay down in it and covered himself in leaves. I picked him up and he gave me his usual objections to being picked up, something he’d always hated. I brought him inside and all night I knew something bad was up with him.
